Overview

The word ¨Celeste¨ refers to the sky-blue colour of this remarkable river. The spectacular colour is the result of a naturally occurring chemical reaction that results in the scattering of sunlight. This unique river is protected within the Volcán Tenorio national park – a large mountainous area of rainforest and cloud forest centered around the dormant Tenorio Volcano that is home to rare species such as tapirs and pumas.

You will hike up a well-maintained trail through this incredible habitat, stopping along the way to see the waterfall which looks almost too blue to be real. You will also witness bubbling sulphurous hot springs and the meeting of the waters where two rivers combine and chemically react to form the unique turquoise waters of Rio Celeste. The hike takes around 6 km and is moderately challenging. You will have the chance to spot wildlife along the trail such as the beautiful Eyelash Pitviper or the iconic Keel-billed Toucan. The cost of the entrance is around $15 regulated by SINAC.
