La Fortuna is a great first stop when traveling through Costa Rica — but don’t overlook the amazing places you might miss on your way from the airport. On this transfer, we stop at a hidden gem: the San Ramón Cloud Forest. This quiet and uncrowded region is one of the best places to spot rare highland birds in their natural habitat.
From February to May, the area is known for hosting nesting Resplendent Quetzals (Pharomachrus mocinno) — and yes, we all want to see a Quetzal. If you’re visiting outside that window, don’t worry — you can still explore Monteverde later on your trip for another chance.
This beautiful forest is also home to species such as the Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus), Emerald Tanager (Tangara florida), Black Guan (Chamaepetes unicolor), Golden-browed Chlorophonia (Chlorophonia callophrys), Sunbittern (Eurypyga helias), and many more.
After birdwatching, you’ll have time for lunch at a local spot of your choice — we’re happy to offer recommendations, but it’s up to you where to dine.
Then we’ll continue toward La Fortuna and drop you off at your accommodation before dark, ready to begin your adventure in Costa Rica.
San Ramón is conveniently located along the route between La Fortuna and popular destinations like San José or Manuel Antonio. It’s an ideal stop to break up the drive and make the most of your travel day with a nature experience in a peaceful, uncrowded setting.
Important: The published price of $280 covers private transportation from SJO Airport to La Fortuna for up to 6 people.
This rate does not include the birdwatching tour.
